Siikainen Comprehensive School is a comprehensive school with approximately 100 students located in a rural environment close to nature in North Satakunta. The school's courtyard provides a pleasant and stimulating learning environment, and the school also has access to a sports hall, sports field and ice hockey rinks located in its immediate vicinity.

Preschool education

What is preschool?

Preschool education is free education provided to children in the year before they start compulsory education. Preschool education is based on the Basic Education Act and Decree. Early childhood education, preschool education and basic education form a coherent whole in terms of a child's development and learning and form the basis for lifelong learning. In preschool education, children have the opportunity to experiment, get excited and learn new things. It also offers children opportunities for diverse interaction and strengthening their social skills. The above-mentioned issues are an important part of the development of a child's school readiness.

The organization of preschool education is based on the preschool curriculum principles issued by the National Board of Education, according to which municipalities have drawn up local preschool curricula and implement preschool education. The purpose of the preschool curriculum principles is to ensure the equal implementation of high-quality and uniform preschool education throughout the country.

Preschool education is organized in the municipality of Siikainen Daycare center in Pikku-Santra, where there is a preschool group. Early childhood education that complements preschool is also organized at Pikku-Santra Daycare Center.

Obligation to participate in or receive preschool education

Preschool education is provided one year before the start of compulsory education. Compulsory education actually begins in the year the child turns seven. Preschool education is mandatory, and the child's guardians must ensure that the child participates in preschool education or other activities that achieve the goals of preschool education (Basic Education Act, Section 26, s).

Free school transport

The municipality of Siikainen arranges free school transportation based on the length of the school trip without a separate application for students in grades 1–2 of preschool and basic education, if the trip to school is over 3 kilometers, and for students in grades 3–9 of basic education, if the trip to school is over 5 kilometers.

If guardians consider the student's journey to school or part of it to be too difficult, burdensome or dangerous, they can apply for free school transport from the Welfare Board on the grounds mentioned above.

The Welfare Board decides on the granting of transportation allowance based on the risk of large predators, and it can be granted retroactively from the day the guardian has applied for the allowance for the student. Otherwise, there will be no changes to the relevant instructions.

A student who has received a decision on free school transport must be prepared to travel part of the school journey on their own. The maximum distance travelled on their own is 2 kilometres for preschoolers and pupils in grades 1–2, and 3 kilometres for pupils in grades 3–9.

If, for reasons of cost or other separately justified reasons, it is not possible to arrange school transport for the entire school trip or part of it, the guardians may be paid a transport allowance for the transport and escort of the student. The compensation is paid separately for morning transport and afternoon transport, and its amount is determined according to Kela's pricing for the use of its own car and the round trip. The Welfare Board decides whether to replace the student's free school transport with a transport and escort allowance paid to the guardians.

Basic education

What is basic education?

Finnish basic education is a general education, and it has both an educational and teaching function. Basic education is based on the Basic Education Act and Decree, and its goal is to support students' growth as people and members of society, and to teach them necessary knowledge and skills. Basic education provides everyone with the same eligibility for further studies.

Basic education is implemented in accordance with the curriculum principles issued by the Finnish National Board of Education and the local curricula based on them. Uniform legislation and national plans promote the realization of equality in education throughout the country. Municipal and school curricula provide more precise guidance on teaching and school work and take into account local needs and perspectives.

In the municipality of Siikainen, basic education is organized at the Siikainen Comprehensive School.

Free school transport
