In September 2020, the municipality of Siikainen organized a logo competition open to everyone in honor of its 150th anniversary.

The question was: “How would you dress up Siikainen’s features and the motto “Nature is ahead” into a simple image?”

The competition received 25 very different proposals, submitted by authors from all over Finland. The competition jury consisted of the jubilee year coordination group, excluding the group's secretary. The works were evaluated anonymously. 11 works were selected for the first round, which illustrates the difficulty of the evaluation. In the end, there were two proposals on the table, of which the magazine based on the municipal map won. The entire jury was behind the winning work, even though the members had other personal candidates for the winner. Aku Tuovinen's demonstration of skills was selected as the winner.

"When I was searching for information about Siikainen online, a map caught my eye. The municipal boundaries immediately looked like a magazine to me, and as I got to know the municipality more, I got the impression that you really have nature nearby," says the winner of the competition, freelance graphic designer Aku Tuovinen from Iisalme.

The map as the basis of the work was exciting, even when the successful Finnish orienteering championships were still fresh in my memory. The shades of the green leaf and the veins of life reaching different parts of the municipality were also attractive in the winning work. The logo with its text was also clear and works on different backgrounds, in color and in black and white, so it can be easily used for various communication and marketing purposes.
