Municipal administration

A municipal decree issued in 1865 ordered the parish and municipality to separate administratively. Early days The municipality of Siikainen and the parish supported each other and handled matters together. The municipal assembly convened for the first time in 1874, when the municipal board also began its operations. The municipal assembly functioned until the law stipulated that it be replaced by an elected municipal council in 1919. The position of municipal mayor in Siikainen municipality was announced for application in 1973. The first municipal mayor, Matti Lahtinen, announced that he would accept the position on 1.8.1973 August XNUMX. To date, a total of five different mayors have been active in Siikainen.

Development in services and transport

The municipal assembly established the Savings Bank in Siikainen in its first year of operation, 1874. The Savings Bank was the third in the entire Satakunta region. Actual operations at the Savings Bank began at the beginning of 1875. A first-class post office was established in the municipality in 1893.

Before the cooperative society was established, Siikainen had a “village store culture”. There were small general stores in the villages where the villagers did their shopping. Siikainen’s first cooperative society, Siikainen Osuuskauppa rl, was founded in 1907 and was founded by 16 members. Over the next ten years, the cooperative idea gained such a foothold in Siikainen that a second cooperative society, Siikainen Kunnan Osuusliike, was founded in 1917, with no less than 143 members joining the cooperative at its founding ceremony. Siikainen Osuuskauppa rl and Siikainen Kunnan Osuusliike merged in 1927.

The construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in a large and water-rich municipality once caused a lot of headaches. Between 1890 and 1920, many stone bridges were completed in the municipality, crossing waterways. The beautiful stone frames can still be seen in several bridges that have since been renovated.

The rise of motoring in Siikainen took its toll. In 1925, the cooperative was granted the right to establish an automatic petrol station. After that, professional motorists also began to appear in the town.

The library was located in the municipal building from 1928 to 1952. After the completion of the central school, the library was moved to the school, and then in 1981 the Siikainen Library found its own place in the new premises of the Pori Region Cooperative Bank. The circle closed when the municipal office and the library moved to the same premises again in 2018.

School

The 1866 Elementary School Decree obliged municipalities to organize public education activities for all citizens. The first elementary school in Siikainen was established in the parish village in 1876. By 1900, the number of elementary school districts had increased to seven. In 1877, the parish village elementary school was converted into an elementary school, with 34 students enrolled. The school was established in the old rectory on the shores of Hurstinlampi. However, this first elementary school in the parish only managed to operate for about three years before it was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1880. Construction of a new school began immediately. At the beginning of the 1900th century, the municipal assembly decided to purchase school buildings for other villages as well. The parish was then divided into six school districts, which in turn shortened school trips. A maximum of 13 elementary school districts have operated in Siikainen.

Today, there is only one school left in Siikainen. Since 2008, the school building, which was completed in 1952 and has been operating as Siikainen Comprehensive School, currently has around 120 students. The school offers basic education to every child in our municipality from preschool to ninth grade.
